It would be 8 more years before World War I would begin, women still did not have the right to vote, and Roosevelt was in office (That’s Teddy not FDR) and golf was being played at Southern Pines Country Club. This club which turned 101 years old last April, is not the oldest course in the Sandhills, but it is one of the best. In an age where modern golf course designers strive to capture golf’s roots in their designs, this unpretentious golf course bears those roots.

In (1923), Donald Ross would add 9 holes and renovate the existing 9 to compete with the courses that were popping up 4 miles down the road at the Village of Pinehurst Resort. Modern grasses were added in 1999 to the greens to keep SPCC up to speed in an area that Golf Digest called the best golf destination in the category of “quality of courses”. Recent upgrades to the clubhouse and course enhancements make SPCC a course to rediscover.

Short by today’s standards, SPCC will challenge every club in your bag, especially the flat stick. Small greens, roll offs and collection areas do an excellent job of protecting par at this classic gem. Located in the heart of the Sandhills, this moderately priced course will add greatly to your next golf trip.
